Dexter Cattle

Our Dexter cattle have been the most wonderful addition to our homestead. They have provided us with both milk and meat and we enjoy their gentle dispositions.

As first-time cattle owners the size of a Dexter is something that is quite desirable as they are easier to manage and have a friendly disposition. Our cattle are brought in daily to be milked and de-ticked. We do this predominantly by hand and only utilize dips if the infestations are particularly bad. A good few weeks after birthing, we milk-share with our calves so that they mostly stay with their moms. Our yield may not be as high as we may like but our moms and babies are happy.

Boschrivier Roy is our current bull and we anxiously await his first babies which should arrive in 2025. The rest of our herd were brought in from Grahamstown. Dexters are fantastic on surviving on little. We see them not only grazing but also browsing on vegetation. They are a great breed to have during a drought as they are very hardy.

Secondo or commonly known as "Too Short" by our staff, will most likely be retained for breeding as our second bull.
